Plan and elevation of memorial bridge
Astronaut Memorial Competition
Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA - 1987 (unrealized)
This memorial concept honors astronauts who have lost their lives during missions or training, serving as a poignant metaphor for humanity’s boundless aspirations contrasted with our sensory limitations.
A ramped bridge, folding beneath itself into an endless figure-eight, connects the Visitor’s Center plaza with curated gardens, symbolizing an infinite journey. As visitors walk the path, the bridge deck—composed of hollow, semi-hollow, and solid plates emit harmonic tones within the human hearing range.
Embedded minerals in the monument’s walls are arranged by their light frequency, casting refracted sunlight across the deck to create a visible spectrum. The sensory experience is further enriched by a sequence of fragrances along the walkway, marking the limits of human perception within the universe.
Where the bridge crosses itself, converging walls support two hemispherical vessels facing skyward and earthward, embodying the balance between human ambition and our corporal existence.
