View of playhouse from Leidesgracht straas
Amsterdam Playhouse
Amsterdam, Netherlands - 1989 (unrealized)
The city of Amsterdam was founded on a sophisticated relationship between the urban environment and the level of the surrounding water. The principle of this solution establishes the bold move of completely excavating the existing sight to create a bridged waterway link between the northern Passeerdersgracht canal, and the Leidsegracht canal immediately to the south.
The new waterway provides the unique opportunity to access the theater by boat, and extends the theater’s activities through use of a detached barge that supports “in-the-round” theatrical performances wherever docked.
Partly below the waterline, and partly above, the three levels of the playhouse supports the primary theatrical functions while offering a variety of experiences that explore the relationship between visitors and the level of the surrounding water.
